Learning with Lindsey: What is the heat index?

Posted
and last updated

KANSAS CITY, MO — On this edition of Learning with Lindsey, we learn more on what the heat index is and why it's so important to look at the 'feel like' temperature when working or playing outside in the summer months.

The Heat Index takes into account the air temperature and relative humidity and gives us a value of what the air feels like to our bodies. With a high heat index, our bodies can't cool us down as efficiently. Sweating is a natural cooling due to evaporation. On a very hot and humid day, the sweat on our bodies can't evaporate as quickly, making us feel a lot hotter than the actual air temperature.
