OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The mornings will only get colder as we approach winter, but police warn you should not turn your car on and let it sit in the driveway to warm up.

It is illegal to leave your car running with the key in it in cities like Kansas City, Missouri and Overland Park.

One man learned that lesson the hard way Wednesday. Police in Overland Park said a man turned on his girlfriend’s car to warm it up for her. He left it running outside. But before his girlfriend made it to her car, somebody stole it.

On top of dealing with the stolen vehicle, police also gave the man a ticket to deal with.

Police say part of why it's illegal to leave cars running is because they become easy targets for criminals.

There are exceptions, however, for cars that use a remote starter because the key is not inside the car when it's running.
