LEAWOOD, Kan. — The city of Leawood, Kansas, and Ring, the doorbell camera company, have partnered to offer the first ever subsidy program in Kansas.

The first 300 Leawood residents to attend a launch event Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. will receive a $100 discount to purchase a Ring product on location.

“It's more eyes in the community. This is the community being proactive and helping us and keeping their community safe,” Capt. Kirt Yoder said.

Yoder said footage from a Ring doorbell helped officers arrest a porch pirate suspected of hitting Leawood, Prairie Village and other cities last month.

Yoder stressed police cannot access anyone’s camera. When the department receives reports of a crime, it uses a web app to ask Ring users to voluntarily share pertinent footage.

“We won't even know where the systems are,” Yoder said. “We just put a request out in the area and those people who have one get the alert.”

Wednesday’s event takes place at the Lodge at Ironwoods Park at 14701 Mission Rd., Leawood, KS from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

To participate, you must bring a valid ID or utility bill proving you live in Leawood. For more information, click here.

This program costs the city $15,000.
