LENEXA, Kan. — Police are investigating after finding human remains in a storage unit Tuesday around 6:30 p.m.

Lenexa police officers went to U-Haul at 9250 Marshall Dr. to check on people who had been sleeping in a storage unit. During the course of the investigation, human remains were discovered in a container inside one of the units.

41 Action News learned Friday the person found dead in the storage unit is a woman.

The Kansas City Police Department is taking the case because they believe the woman's death happened in Kansas City, Missouri.

Officials said they are not sure if the report of people sleeping there was at all connected to the body they found. Detectives were trying to determine how many units were involved.

On Wednesday customers were not allowed inside the facility. A U-Haul representative on site said the storage center would remain closed while officers were on scene.

41 Action News spoke to one couple who tried to access their unit Wednesday afternoon. Tom and Michelle Hicks called the news of what happened inside the center scary.

"It could happen anywhere. It's just unfortunate it was here," Michelle Hicks, who rents several units, said.

They were also surprised to learn people had potentially been sleeping in a unit.

"I guess sometimes people can come in when it's accessible and then just stay there overnight. Maybe it was a homeless person," Michelle Hicks said.
