KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- The Lewis and Clark Viaduct will be closed for repairs for the next two years, causing headaches for many metro drivers.
Tens of thousands of vehicles travel into and out of downtown Kansas City per day.
The bridge is old, and the $64 million project will help bring it up to date.
Westbound I-70 is closed past the Broadway interchange to 3rd Street in Kansas City, Kan.
The ramps from Broadway, Beardsley and I-35 north leading into I-70 west are closed.
The project also affects the ramps from I-70 west to Minnesota, Washington and Fairfax Trafficway in KCK.
Eastbound I-70 will be open throughout the project.
The semi trucks delivering to the Fairfax Industrial District will be forced to take other ways, too, likely causing more congestion on other routes.
Detour options include using 670, or you can take I-35 south to 27th Street, turn around, get back on I-35 to 670.
Expect delays as drivers get used to the changes.
The Buck O'Neil Bridge will also undergo repairs starting around June. Southbound lanes will close for around six months.
