Local group lends a helping hand after Hurricane Harvey makes landfall

ROUND ROCK, Texas --

Hurricane Harvey caused damage across the Texas coast, bringing strong wind and rain.

Friday, a group of volunteers with Heart to Heart left Kansas City to help people in shelters because of the hurricane.

"We are here setting up to respond to the shelters in town. In Austin and San Antonio, a lot of people moved from there because of the hurricane and they need supplies like hygiene kits and blanket kits that we are going to hand out,” said Brian McDonell with Heart to Heart.

The group arrived in Round Rock, Texas Friday to help.

Staci Parelman is one of the volunteers. She says they will start their work by helping people at shelters in San Antonio and Austin.

“Our medical team will be driving to San Antonio with our medical unit to start giving people tenuous shots and medical needs as necessary,” said Parelman.

McDonell says the people in the area left everything they own and know. The organization says they want to do their part to help those that need it the most.

“A lot of them left quickly and they need health care products and hygiene kits to start over at this point. We will then work our way over to the flood and hurricane areas.

More volunteers from Heart to Heart will get to Texas Sunday to help.
