Mahomes' barber doesn't let celebrity clients go to his head

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Professional athletes often set new trends, and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is no different.

Arguably one of the most recognizable things about Mahomes is his hairstyle.

So many kids are copying the “Show Me” cut that 41 Action News anchor Richard Sharp had to find out what all the buzz was about.

He caught up with the man behind the haircut, DeJaun Bonds. He owns Purple Label Barbershop in Overland Park, Kansas.

“Kinda cool to see the kids and even adults walking around that want to mimic what we see our professional athletes locally, and nationally wearing,” Bonds said.

Mahomes’ cut isn’t the first iconic hairstyle Bonds has under his belt. He also cut Eric Hosmer’s signature mohawk and Jarrod Dyson’s “zoom.”

He’s done cuts for dozens of Chiefs and Royals players over the course of two decades.

“Way back, old Chiefs — Priest Holmes, Eric Johnson, to the current Chiefs and Royals,” Bonds listed.

While the walls of Bonds’ shop are lined with pictures of pro athletes, people walking by might not guess the big names that have walked through the doors.

Bonds said he doesn’t want peoples’ business because he cuts Mahomes’ hair —he wants it because he and his team are good at what they do.

“Let me get you in the door first, I don't need you to judge me first,” Bonds said. “I don't want you to pass judgment on what this is, or that this is not the barbershop for me.”

One of his first-ever customers still comes to the shop decades later.

“It’s nothing to him to cut entire super bowl teams,” John Purkey said. “It doesn’t go to his head because it’s who he’s founded in. DeJuan, he’s a man of God. He’s founded and he’s grounded in who he is.”
