A video making rounds on social media over the weekend showed Maddox yelling at KCPD officers near the Country Club Plaza, then being arrested and pepper sprayed.
The crowd was also pepper sprayed while trying to stop the arrest, many claiming Maddox did not do anything wrong.
KCPD later issued a statement on the arrest, which was featured on CNN. Anchor Don Lemon responded with, "That's BS. Come on, Kansas City. Do better."
We’ll review officers’ actions. We made 151 arrests this weekend; this was 1 for city protest-related charges. He didn’t resist arrest, but the crowd responded by throwing objects & physically interfering w/ the arrest, which is a crime & led to the officers using pepper spray.

Despite the weekend events, Maddox's message was hopeful.
"We love the fact that everyone here is assembled for love," he said into a megaphone.
