Relatives of man killed in hit-and-run crash in KCK want justice

Duane Rayborn, 57, was killed in a hit-and-run crash Thursday night in the 2500 block of South 14th Street.

Witnesses told KCK police they heard a loud noise around 9 p.m. Thursday. An hour later they went outside and found Rayborn's body.

Now Rayborn's relatives are asking the public to help them find justice.

Colette Thompson is Rayborn's sister. Thompson and her husband Ray talked with the media Friday, asking the public for help finding the person who hit and killed Rayborn. Thompson was too emotional to talk about her brother, so her husband Ray did. He described Rayborn as a kind and loving person.

"He wasn't selfish. He'd help you in a heartbeat with anything. He was just a good guy, hard worker. He never married, never had a family, but he was always there for everyone," Ray Thompson said.

This is the second death in the family this month. Collette Thompson's sister-in-law was buried last week, and now the family is planning Rayborn's funeral.

They are asking the public to call police if they have any information that could help catch the driver who left the scene.

"I tell you, it's just, it's very difficult not to know who it is, and I mean it's most likely an accident because he didn't have a mean bone in his body and if you did it turn yourself in," said Ray Thompson.

Police took pieces of a headlight found at the scene to car dealerships and collision repair centers trying to find out the make and model of the car, but so far have had no luck.

The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department’s Traffic Support Unit/Critical Collision Response Team is investigating the incident. Anyone with information should call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
