KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Willie Arthur Smith Marching Cobras are a Kansas City tradition. And now they’re taking that tradition to New Orleans.
They will spend the weekend at the Bayou Classic experiencing the Battle of the Bands, performing in the parade and attending the renowned game.
It's a dream come true for Shalice Kelley-Powell, who dances for the Cobras.
She told 41 Action News her plan is to "go down there, smile and just do what you gotta do."
Hamilton wants everyone to know that when it comes to the team, "We ready."
The drill team started in 1969 with just 13 boys and has been changing lives ever since.
Now, the group is celebrating Thanksgiving with a trip to the 46th Annual Bayou Classic.
"It's a good thing for the kids to go and celebrate these 50 years," drill master and senior Don Daughtry said.
He has been part of the Cobras since he was just 9 years old. Drum captain Lionell Hamilton, now 18 years old, joined when he was 3.
The Bayou Classic is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 30. The parade begins at 9:30 a.m. and kickoff is at 4 p.m.
