KANSAS CITY, Mo. — McGonigle's Market in Waldo plans to close later this month, and the space will reopen as a Fareway grocery store while keeping the McGonigle’s catering service, according to its website.
The store at 79th Street and Ward Parkway, which is well-known in the metro for its selection of meats, will close around Feb. 21, according to the website. In early March, the space will reopen as a Fareway store with McGonigle’s Kitchen and Catering.
“Fareway is continuing to use the McGonigle’s name as the deli, BBQ to go, and catering arm will remain open once the store changes hands, still managed by longtime McGonigle’s employee, Randy Ross,” the business wrote on its website.
In a letter posted online, owner Mike McGonigle said that he is proud of what the business has become but has been thinking about a transition since experiencing some health issues in 2015.
"I am so grateful for all of the support that you, the community of Kansas City, have provided to me," McGonigle wrote in the letter. "I have often said that we have the best customers in the world. It has been an honor and a privilege to be a part of your lives for these many years."
Some McGonigle’s employees will be employed by Fareway and continue to work in the new store.
Fareway plans to honor McGonigle’s gift cards in 2020, as well as the "Ribs for Kids" tokens.
Until McGonigle’s closes, the store will be liquidating its inventory, with “huge savings” planned over the next couple of weeks.
