OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Heather and Kyle Steppe always joked they would have a Super Bowl baby. The Overland Park couple even laughed about naming their son Patrick, if the Chiefs won the Super Bowl.
On Super Bowl Sunday, the Steppe's tongue-in-cheek predictions turned out to be spot on.
"It was one of those things where fate just kind of took over, and it was something we were kind of hoping for all along," Kyle said.
Heather's due date was the second week of Feburary, but her water broke on Feb. 2. Doctors initially told her she would have to wait until 6 p.m. to have her C-section unless her contractions progressed.
"When they had told us we would have to wait until 6 (o'clock), we were super bummed," Heather said. "Obviously, it was right in the middle of the Super Bowl."
Apparently, her newborn son did not want to wait either. He made his appearance at 4:28 p.m., in time for his family to turn on the game.
"We wheeled into post-op and plugged in the laptop, literally as kickoff was happening," Heather said. "It was just awesome."
The day after the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV, Heather and Kyle made it official, naming their son Patrick Jonathan Robert Steppe.
They hope he turns out to be a big Chiefs fan, too.
"Hopefully, he lives up to the champion name," Kyle said.
