KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Mission city leaders put into motion a plan to repair or remove the former Mission Bowl, finding the structure to be unsafe more than four years after a fire heavily damaged the Johnson County landmark.

The Mission City Council voted unanimously on Monday to approve a resolution deeming the building at 5399 Martway St. unsafe. The property owner now has 10 days to present a plan to restore or remove the building within 30 days, according to a spokeswoman for the city administrator.

If the property owner does not present a plan within 10 days, the city can take action to have the building removed and bill the property owner for the cost.

The council’s vote follows a public hearing in October, where city building official Jim Brown told council members the building was determined to be unsafe by city staff and the fire marshal during a July inspection.

According to Brown, the building was found to have multiple safety issues, including roof damage, structural deficiencies along the front wall, and no working utilities. Brown also told the council the front door was unlocked when staff arrived for the inspection, presenting security concerns.

After the fire in April 2015, owners planned to reopen the 55-year-old bowling alley but said legal issues with a contractor were delaying the process.

Mission Bowl continues to operate a location in Olathe.
