KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Others may need to be tested after a University of Missouri student contracted active tuberculosis, the school announced Monday.
The student has voluntarily left campus, and the MU Student Health Center, university physicians and the Columbia/Boone County Department of Health and Human Services are working to identify others who may need testing, the university said in a tweet.

Tuberculosis, an infectious disease that mainly affects the lungs, is often spread when an individual with the disease coughs near others, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is spread only through the air, not by touching or sharing food or drink.
As the university identifies individuals at highest risk, they will be advised to get tested, which can be done on campus or at the Department of Health and Human Services.
