More than 100,000 without power, trees down

Storms bringing gusty winds and rain knocked out power to more than 100,000 customers throughout the metro early Saturday morning.

Shortly before 5:00 a.m. gusty winds began which knocked down many trees, broke branches and downed power lines.

KCP&L reported more than 72,000 customers out. Officials say the metro and northland areas were hit the hardest, and as residents woke up Saturday morning they expected outage numbers to increase.

Westar reported more than 17,000 customers without power.

BPU reported 3,228 customers out, and Independence Power  & Light reported only 266 customers out.

Officials expect crews to be working throughout the day to get customers back on.
