KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The American Red Cross is helping more than 30 families displaced by a fire at Waldo Heights Apartments Monday night.

Kansas City, Missouri, firefighters were called to the scene in the 8000 block of Troost Avenue around 8 p.m. By 8:30 p.m., the fire had spread to two of three floors and firefighters were being pulled from the building.

Two people were taken to the hospital, one of whom jumped from a third-floor balcony to escape the fire.

Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department, said officers initially were called to the apartments on reports of a disturbance. Becchina said more information would be released later Tuesday.

The Red Cross planned to be at the scene Tuesday to reach any more people affected by the fire, according to spokesperson Angie Springs.

She said at times like these, it’s best for people to be with their family and support network, but the Red Cross is helping many with temporary housing.

The Salvation Army is also offering help to the fire’s victims.

Affected Waldo Heights residents can fill out an online form and Salvation Army will work to replace some items they lost in the fire, such as necessities like clothes and toiletries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
