On Sunday afternoon community leaders and members of the Morning Star Baptist Church came together for the grand opening of the Morning Star Community Center.
Pastor John Modest Miles thought of the concept after he saw the block decaying.
"It was a lot of abandoned buildings and not only abandoned buildings but they was infested with prostitution and drugs," said Pastor Miles.
"It's taken a long time but a lot of things do, and good things are sometimes worth waiting for. This is something Pastor Miles has been waiting for a long time. It's a good thing and the wait has certainly been worth it," said Mayor Sly James.
It took two years to build the $3.5 million dollar center. The building will provide services to the community including job and computer training, counseling, health and wellness education and more.
“Whatever the needs are for people, we are here to make sure that that happens," said Pastor Miles.
