KANSAS CITY, Mo. — University of Missouri students in Columbia will be required to wear masks in campus buildings when they return to class in the fall to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

UM System President and Interim MU Chancellor Mun Choi announced the decision in a news conference Thursday, according to Columbia NBC affiliate, KOMU.

Choi also said that the university will provide face shields for instructors to wear so that deaf and hard of hearing students can read their lips.

MU will begin classes in-person on Aug. 24.

It has not been decided yet whether or not other University of Missouri campuses will put the same face mask requirement in place.

Earlier on Thursday, the University of Kansas announced anyone on their campuses would have to wear a face mask in community spaces or when within six feet of any other person.
