Multiple pets rescued from overnight fire in Overland Park

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Overland Park Fire Department said a home in the 5500 block of Newton Steet was damaged in an overnight fire.

Around 1:15 a.m. Thursday, fire crews were called to the home.

First responders on the scene reported smoke and fire coming from a window of the home.

The one person inside was able to get out safely.

Firefighters said a number of pets were rescued, including four dogs and numerous cats. One cat died in the fire.

The Red Cross is helping the resident with housing.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
