KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Grandparents Against Gun Violence in Kansas City is organizing students in the metro to support students who survived the Florida school shooting.
Judy Sherry, president of Grandparents Against Gun Violence, said she is pushing for a total ban on AR-15 weapons.
“I think the reporting system needs to improve because sometimes a person’s mental health issue has not been entered in the database so gun dealers don’t know there’s a problem,” said Sherry.
Some Republican leaders are promoting a proposal to allow citizens concerned about a person's mental stability to go to court, testify and a judge would decide if a gun restriction should be issued to prevent the person from buying a gun.
Michael Everhart, a gun seller in Overland Park, said more restrictions and regulations are not the answer
“Schools are soft targets and when someone decides they want to kill a lot of people they choose an easy target,” said Everhart.
Everhart believes that willing teachers and school administrators should be armed and trained to respond.
