KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Nordstrom has been an anchor tenant at the Oak Park Mall in Overland Park for 20 years, but in 2021 that will change. The retail giant announced that it would move to the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City.

Nordstrom made the announcement on Friday through a press release. The new, approximately 116,000 square-foot store is expected to open in 2021.

City leaders in Overland Park learned about the move through the media, but believe the mall will be able to attract another strong tenant.

Sean Reilly is a spokesperson for the city of Overland Park.

"I think it's truly a business decision. The retail industry is experiencing a change with more online shopping. I feel that's part of it," said Reilly.

We reached out to Oak Park Mall about the change. They released a statement that read:

Nordstrom has been an important part of Oak Park over the years, but we are excited about the opportunity to recapture this prime real estate for future redevelopment. The retail environment is changing rapidly and this decision provides us with an excellent opportunity to transform Oak Park for even greater success in the future.  Nordstrom will remain at Oak Park until 2021.  Between now and then, our team has ample time to evaluate various redevelopment scenarios in order to create the plan that makes the most sense for the market.

Nordstrom is expected to move to the Country Club Plaza in 3 years.

The Plaza is owned by the Taubman Company. They declined to comment on the move or say where the retail giant would be located within the Country Club Plaza.
