KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Olathe firefighters knocked down a house fire Thursday afternoon and rescued two family pets from the smoke-filled home.

Crews arrived about 2:30 p.m. and found smoke and fire coming from a house in the 1900 block of South Parkwood Drive, according to an Olathe Fire Department news release.

The fire damaged the garage and sent smoke into the house.

Firefighters went inside and rescued a cat and dog, according to the news release.

The family was not home when the fire broke out.

The Red Cross is helping to find temporary shelter for the three adults and six children who lived in the house.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
