OLATHE, Kan. - Police are investigating a homicide after an armed disturbance in the parking lot of a business in the 100 block of South Clairborne Road just before midnight.
Officers were called to the scene about 11:45 p.m. on a reported disturbance, and upon arrival, they discovered one person had been shot.
The victim was transported but died at an area hospital a short time later. On Monday, Olathe police identified the victim as Daniel Bowden, 17, of Olathe, Kansas.
Detectives gathered information that led them to a home at 153rd Terrace and Kenwood.
Neighbors said tactical members, police officers, and others worked for hours to try to get those inside to come out.
"There was the big black SWAT van, and they all had helmets on. There were going into the house. They said this is the Olathe Police Department, you need to come out with your hands up," said Kylie Cox, who lives on Kenwood.
Police dogs and the crime lab were part of the investigation Saturday morning. Neighbors say at least two families were evacuated.
"I know people in the first two houses. I've known them for years. I am concerned for their safety," explained Judy Woelfel, who said she did feel better knowing some people were moved out. "My husband told me to lock the doors."
Several people were taken from a home for questioning.
Neighbors hope the shooter is found quickly.
"It's not just that people have the right to have a gun. The rest of us have a right to feel safe," said Woelfel.
Anyone with information is encouraged to call Olathe Police at (913) 971-7500.
