Plans to renovate the old Indian Spring Shopping Center are in the works.
The Lane4 Property Group has proposed using 26 acres of the lot for flex/tech buildings and light industrial spaces. The Unified Government is also ready to develop the property. They purchased it in 2007 for more than $8 million.
Melissa Bynum is a district one commissioner-at-large for the Unified Government.
"It's been a decade now of owning Indian Springs and that's been costly. That's been costly to the Unified Government and the tax payers because we've got a major investment," said Bynum.
Wyandotte County native, Janice Witt wants a return on the investment from taxpayers. She believes the future development should serve the community.
"Senior living, feeding, retail. It was supposed to be a huge aquatic center. We are asking for our leadership to invest in us. We're saying we deserve some place nice to come," said Witt.
Hunter Harris with the LANE4 Property Group told 41 Action News this would be the first phase of the development. It's expected to create 380 jobs. They're hopeful this project with be a catalyst for future development on the 90 acres of land.
The Unified Government does want community input on the development. The public meeting will be held April 19th at 6:00 pm at the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools Central office. It's located at 2010 N. 59th Street.
