KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One person died after a car crashed into a house in Shawnee, Kansas, on Monday afternoon.

Johnson County officials said the driver of the vehicle died in the incident, which occurred in the 5500 block of Meadowsweet Lane. It was not clear if the driver, later identified as 54-year-old Paul Hendley of Shawnee, died as a result of the crash.

“By the time I looked up, he was already on the grass going probably 50 or more. Hits an electrical box, electric box goes flying. He then crosses the road and proceeds to hit the fences and hits the second house.” witness Cameron Schwegman told 41 Action News. “It was just a loud thud and then silent. It was completely silent after it hit.”

A neighbor said they heard some thumps then saw other neighbors trying to help Hendley.

Schwegman said that he tried to help Hendley, but the truck was so compacted by the collision that he couldn't get him out.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

No one else was injured.
