Organizers: Moving Chiefs parade because of snow was never an option

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Despite a cold and snowy forecast for the Chiefs Kingdom Champions Parade, organizers said they never considered pushing the celebration back a day.

“Chiefs fans are used to tailgating in the cold and being outside in the cold,” said Kathy Nelson, president and CEO of the Kansas City Sports Commission. “I would suggest winter boots and not tennis shoes. I would say as long as you dress in layers, you’ll be OK.”

At a news conference Tuesday morning, Mayor Quinton Lucas said that Chiefs fans know how to handle the cold.

"I've seen a lot of people over the years at tailgates at Arrowhead Stadium," Lucas said, "so I know KC and Chiefs Kingdom in particular knows how to handle the cold. But if you're worried, come downtown a little extra early, spend some money downtown and maybe stay downtown a little extra late to make sure you get to enjoy what will be a beautiful day, an historic day, in Kansas City."

The parade to celebrate the Chiefs’ Super Bowl win is expected to draw 1 million people or more to downtown Kansas City, Missouri. On Tuesday, the city’s Public Works Department said crews have started pretreating the parade route and will make clearing snow from roads leading to downtown a priority.

The city does not plan to set up any warming centers along the parade route, but the KC Live! block in the Power and Light District said it plans to have heaters running and a live stream of the Union Station rally on its big screen.

Snow is likely to fall through the parade before tapering off overnight. Accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are possible throughout the day. Highs on Wednesday will be in the mid to upper 20s, according to 41 Action News meteorologists.
