KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Overland Park Planning Commission took an important step Monday toward renaming part of street in memory of slain police officer Mike Mosher.

The commission recommended approval of an ordinance to rename part of 123rd Street as Mike Mosher Boulevard.

Now, the proposal will go before the Overland Park City Council at its Jan. 11 meeting for a final vote.

Mosher was driving to work May 3 in uniform when he responded to a hit-and-run near West 143rd Street and Antioch Road.

He was in full uniform when he pulled over the suspect vehicle near West 123rd and Mackey streets.

Mosher was shot and killed during the subsequent traffic stop.

He was remembered as a big-hearted officer, who was heavily involved in the Overland Park Police Department's charity efforts and cared deeply for the community.

The suspect, 38-year-old Phillip M. Carney, also died in the exchange of gunfire.

The Johnson County District Attorney posthumously declared Mosher’s use of deadly force justified.
