Officials said the shooting occurred at an apartment complex just before 3 p.m. near the 13300 block of Larsen near Blue Valley Northwest High School.
In a statement sent to 41 Action News, Overland Park police said officers responded to a domestic disturbance call where the caller stated he was armed with a knife and threatening to kill himself and his wife. When officers arrived at the scene, the man allegedly charged toward them and one fired shots at the man, hitting him twice.
The suspect was transported to the hospital in stable condition.
Neither officer was injured and both were placed on administrative leave pending investigation by the Johnson County Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Team.
With roads around the apartment area closed off during the response and police tape on the streets, residents said the shooting brought concern.
"I was actually at work and my family called me and told me," explained neighbor Laura Amos. "I didn't know where it had happened. I didn't know if it was an active shooter. I have children so I was very concerned."
After hearing further details of the officer-involved shooting, Amos said she felt uneasy following the emergency.
"There's lots of anxiety," she explained. "It's shocking to live somewhere where you know that someone was shot."
The shooting took place just a half mile from Blue Valley Northwest High School, with the school's soccer field across the street from some of the Sovereign apartments.
"It's a lot of families and retired people," explained resident Eric Chasco. "Everyone is friendly. You walk your dog around here and everyone is waving hello."
Chasco told 41 Action News that seeing the police presence on Monday was out of the ordinary for the neighborhood.
"Nothing like this has ever happened around here since we've lived here for the last three years," he said. "I feel absolutely terrible for the police officer to be put in a situation where he felt like he had to do that."
Officials are asking anyone who has any information or witnessed the incident to call Overland Park Police at 913-895-6300 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
