Overland Park police: thieves can use your trash to steal your identity

Police believe thieves in Overland Park are stealing trash cans so they can commit identity theft.

23 trash cans have been stolen from Overland Park neighborhoods since last December. Three of the homeowners who had the trash cans stolen also had their bank accounts and credit cards hacked.

Police are advising residents to shred documents with personal information before putting them in the trash.

"Tear them up if you don't have a shredder," said officer John Lacy, spokesperson for the Overland Park Police Department.

If someone in a van or a truck is spotted taking trash cans, officials recommend getting the vehicle's license plate number and calling police.
