Overland Park service station closing after 60 years in business

Mac (Steve)  and Mike McGhee decided it's time to say goodbye.

The family-owned business, started by their father, opened June 7, 1956 as Mac’s 66 Service Station.

It’s become more than just a full-service station. Mike McGhee said it’s become like family.

“To the customers that have stuck with us over the years, we appreciate their loyalty, and we’re going to miss each and every one,” Mike McGhee said.

He said unfortunately the time to say goodbye has come.

“Every business changes," Mike McGhee said. "The writing was on the wall in the late 80’s, and we were too stubborn or dumb to make a change.”

The tradition of full-service stations has faded over the years. In fact, Mac’s 66 has been around longer than Overland Park has been a city.

But the brothers say two things will always stay the same: you’ll always have a friend in Mike and Mac McGhee, and old habits are hard to break.

“Tomorrow morning I’ll probably wake up at the normal time and get up like I normally do with no place to go,” Mike McGhee told 41 Action News.

“What do I want to say to my customers?” Mac McGhee asked. “Just let them know it’s not the business I’m going to miss. I’m going to miss them as people.”

The McGhee’s have sold Mac’s 66 Service Station, and the brothers said the property will now be converted into a coffee shop.
