A battery overheated while charging and sparked a serious house fire in Lee's Summit Thursday night.
A radio controlled car that was charging, overheated and started the fire, according to the Lee's Summit Fire Department.
The fire broke out in the family's basement garage near northeast Carriage and Grant Streets.
The family was able to get out safely, but the dog inside of the home was sent to the vet after being found unresponsive, firefighters said.
The toy car that started the fire was plugged in and sitting on a workbench in the garage, officials said.
Crews told 41 Action News they got it out quickly and the fire didn't spread.
The Lee's Summit Fire Department is now giving a warning about batteries, especially lithium batteries.
They are known for storing a large amount of energy and exploding.
Samsung phones were recalled for this issue.
TheFederal Aviation Administration banned the phones on planes due to the possibility of them exploding.
Last March, a Pennsylvania girl died in a fire caused by a Hoverboard explosion.
Do not charge lithium batteries overnight or leave them unmonitored, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
