KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Overnight storms downed trees, and caused power outages and minor flooding throughout the metro area.

In Independence, Missouri, the Missouri Department of Transportation said 24 Highway was closed between Sterling and Willow, with dispatchers reporting water over the road.

To the west of that closure, Kansas City, Missouri, police had blocked off Chestnut Trafficway near Independence Avenue due to a fallen tree. Dispatchers told 41 Action News crews had been on the scene for a few hours and were unsure when the road would reopen.

Flooding was also a concern in Cass County, where the sheriff's office was asking residents to steer clear of Lake Annette Drive north of Freeman, Missouri.

The Archie School District canceled class for the day. In a post to social media, the district said flooding in low-lying areas and power outages contributed to the decision.

Residents also experienced power outages in South Kansas City. At one point early Tuesday morning, KCP&L reported as many as 138 outages affecting 8,901 customers in its service area.

41 Action News crews found some storm damage near 88th and Summit, where a tree had toppled onto a car. Tree removal crews and KCP&L worked together to clear the mess and restore power. No one was injured.

With winds speeds reaching 60 mph overnight, another tree toppled onto a house off of East 18th Street. The owner told 41 Action News there was no serious damage done to the house, since it landed mostly in the driveway.

With more rain in the forecast, the National Weather Service is urging people to stay weather aware, watch for flash flooding, and never to drive through water.

Six inches of water is enough to cause a driver to lose control, and two feet of water can carry most vehicles away.
