Saturday emergency responders got some important training on how to save lives -- the lives of k-9 officers.
More and more departments are relying on K-9s for swat situations, apprehending suspects and search and rescue. Many times if those dogs are hurt -- it can take too long to get them to a vet.
Today's training gives their handlers and specialized paramedics the skills to treat the dogs immediately.
"So we have IV insertion, as well as providing subcutaneous fluids," said Chris Winger, tactical paramedic. "We are doing wound bandaging in two different classrooms, focusing on the limbs in one and the torso and head in the other. And then in the final area we've got intubation - the dogs that need a breathing tube down their throat."
More than 20 paramedics and K-9 handlers from across the metro took park in the training.
