KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A new partnership announced Wednesday will lead to a new educational play site in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Kansas City, Missouri, Parks and Recreation Department announced the partnership with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ 15 and the Mahomies Foundation to fund and build a new play site in Martin Luther King Jr. Square Park.

Parks department officials plan to accept bids, with the winning vendor working with a nine-member Community Design Team to design and build the inclusive play side in the legacy of King.

“The 15 and the Mahomies Foundation is pumped to build a playground where KC kids can play and be active in their neighborhood,” Mahomes said Wednesday in a press release. “We hope that this project brings this community together in a positive and engaging way for years to come.”

Last November, as the community continued conversations on how best to remember King, organizers said one way would be to clean up and renovate the park, which was dedicated to King in 1978.

“I thank and appreciate Patrick for his continued investment in our community, and his commitment to social and racial justice — yet another reason we are so privileged to have him here in Kansas City,” Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Quinton Lucas said in the release. “I look forward to the creation of a new play site at Martin Luther King Square Park that’s open to and intended for all children in our community.”

Play site details are expected to be announced on the city’s website through a request for proposals listing next week.
