KANSAS CITY, Mo. — This summer college students can use Pell Grant funds to help with expenses for summer school.
Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt is a leader in a Senate committee that brought the funding back for summer school. For years, college students could only use it during Fall and Spring semesters.
“I’m here today, and a few other places in a couple of days, to try to call attention generally to people who are thinking about college, who are thinking about higher education, or already in higher education, to be sure they understand there is another option that we haven’t had for a while. That option is year-round Pell,” Sen. Blunt said while speaking at Metropolitan Community College.
MCC officials said the funding can help support more than 100 more students at the school during the summer. At UMKC about 3,000 of their students are Pell Grant eligible.
Sen. Blunt said he helped secure the funds in a provision of the government funding bill, which was signed into law in March, to raise the maximum Pell Grant award to $6,095, an increase of $175.
"Post-high school, the quicker you get your basic education behind you, the less debt you will have and the sooner you will get a paycheck that’s reflective of what you’ve learned in higher education. That’s the best thing. And don’t borrow more money than you need,” Sen. Blunt said.
Sen. Blunt said this will help about 20,000 college students in Missouri.
