KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A woman shot and killed a 34-year-old man Friday afternoon in the parking lot of the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department's Central Patrol Division, according to police.

The victim was found near an SUV in the parking lot entrance of the police station at 1200 Linwood Blvd. just before 4 p.m.

A police spokesperson said the shooting happened in front of three children in an SUV, all between the ages of 3 and 7.

None of the children were injured, but police are mobilizing community resources to assist with the traumatized children.

Paramedics took the man to a local hospital, where he died around 5:30 p.m.

According to a KCPD spokeswoman, officers in the back of the patrol station heard gunshots and saw a male victim running toward the police station's front door after stepping outside.

The shooting victim collapsed just outside the station.

Police then heard the sound of screaming children and found the kids inside the SUV.

A person of interest is in custody. That person was located at a nearby residence and taken into custody without incident, KCPD said.

It's unclear how or if the person of interest is connected to the shooting victim or the children.

Investigators were canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses, hoping to piece together what led up to the shooting. Police are not looking for any additional suspects at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to call the KCPD Homicide Unit at 816-234-5043 or call the Greater Kansas City Crime Stoppers Tips Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
