KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- New details surrounding a controversial project has Independence City leaders questioning if deals are being made behind closed doors.
Last year, in a 5-2 vote, the Independence City Council awarded a nearly $10 million contract to Environmental Operations Inc., to decommission the city’s old power plant.
The 41 Action News investigators spent months looking into the deal.
City records show Environmental Operations Inc. received a special invite to speak with the city council one year before winning the bid.
No other companies were invited.
41 Action News also discovered a common thread between this project and other city deals.
“I don’t doubt for a minute there’s something going on,” Independence city council member Karen DeLuccie said.
