Victim killed as Raytown firefighters turn back fire at high-rise apartment building

UPDATE | The victim has been identified by the Raytown Police Department as 69-year-old Nathaniel Swopes.

ORIGINAL STORY | One person has died in an apartment fire early Monday afternoon in Raytown.

Just before 1 p.m., fire crews from the Raytown Fire Protection District and the Kansas City, Missouri, Fire Department were called to an apartment fire at Bowen Tower Seniors Apartments in the 6100 block of Raytown Road.

The first crews on the scene reported smoke showing from the second floor of a multi-story apartment building and requested additional crews to respond.

The fire was contained to one room, according to fire crews.

Around 25 people were displaced by the blaze.

Three people were transported to an area hospital for smoke inhalation. The three individuals are not in critical condition.

Bowen Tower Seniors Apartments houses residents ages 55 and older.

The Missouri State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
