Repaired Sky Station safely returned to downtown Kansas City skyline

The Sky Station sculpture on the Kansas City Convention Center is now complete after a 300-foot pylon was reinstalled at the Kansas City Convention Center.

The 40-foot tall sculpture by artist R.M. Fischer was removed in May after being damaged by lightning.

Street crews started blocking off streets before 6:00 a.m. Sunday to prepare for the hair curler structure to be put back into its original position. The Skycrane lifted the aluminum sculpture into the air, while workers waited to secure it to the pylon.

The reinstallation started a little after 7 a.m. amid dozens of spectators, including Diane Karowski who recorded video on her phone as the helicopter moved the two massive structures into place.

"It looks right. Kansas City's skyline looks like it's supposed to.  We were out here for the removal and it's an interesting process," said Karowski.

The A. Zahner Company made the repairs to the sculpture and oversaw the reinstallation efforts.
