Residents of Lenexa have reported receiving official looking, but fake emails from the Lenexa Municipal Court, according to the Lenexa Police Department.
The emails ask the recipient to pay fines from issued traffic citations. It gives information about the fines along with a bogus link similar to violations@citygovernment.co.gov.
According to Lenexa police, the Lenexa Municipal Court does communicate with people who owe fines to the court via email, but all communication from any valid city account should originate from a lenexa.com address.
Email recipients who aren’t sure of the email’s validity should contact the Lenexa Municipal Court Clerks at 913-477-7600 or email them directly at courts@lenexa.com.
Police say as a general safety precaution to not click on links in any email you receive, unless you are absolutely certain of where it originated.
