KANSAS CITY, Mo. — There's a new scam going around Johnson County.

Dr. Chad Geri is the owner and veterinarian for Compassionate Care, an in-home care service. Tuesday, he got a call from someone pretending to be Lt. Greg Smith with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.

Geri said they told him, "There's a citation and an arrest warrant for me for not having shown up for jury duty. My whole reaction was I don't want to be arrested for an honest mistake."

The caller said to meet him at an address close to the county courthouse right away. It also looked like he called from the sheriff's office. Geri called and left a message and thankfully, the real Lt. Smith got it.

"Seemed like they knew this was going on," Geri said.

He's thankful he didn't go to that address, and he doesn't want anyone else to do it either.

"It certainly was very alarming knowing that I was going to go to a physical location where these con artists were going to try to con me out of money," Geri shared. "Really research and make sure this is the real deal before you kind of let you get them into that panic where you're not thinking straight."
