SHAWNEE, Kan. — Before casting a vote to decide whether to raise property taxes to pay for a new community center, registered voters in Shawnee, Kansas, can learn more about the proposal at a presentation Wednesday night.

The city will host a meeting from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Civic Centre, 13817 Johnson Dr.

Beginning in early May, the city will mail ballots to voters asking to increase the property tax rate for 20 years to collect $38 million to fund building and operating the proposed community center. City documents show a property valued at $200,000 in 2018 would pay an extra $67 per year, should voters approve the increase.

The facility would focus on recreation-related activities for children and adults. Plans call for including an indoor pool, track, gym, athletic field, workout equipment and more.

A city memorandum shows leaders have had their eyes on building a community center since 2005 and purchased land near 61st Street and Woodland Drive in 2007 for the project. The recession put plans on hold but talks began again in 2018.

The city hopes to count the results of the mail-in election by the end of May.
