Shawnee mayor arrested, charged with perjury

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Shawnee Mayor Michelle Distler was arrested Wednesday and charged with perjury, according to Johnson County court records.

Distler, 47, was charged with one count of perjury in a non-felony trial, a Level 9 felony, stemming from a court proceeding on March 7, according to records.

The charge was filed on Nov. 23.

Distler was booked into the Johnson County Detention Center on Wednesday morning and released a short time later on a $2,500 bond, according to records.

She is due in court on Jan. 5.

The city of Shawnee released a statement Wednesday afternoon:

"The City was notified that the Johnson County District Attorney filed a charge against Mayor Michelle Distler on Dec. 2, 2020. We want to reassure our community that City services and programs will not be impacted. Any further questions about the charge need to be directed to the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office."

Distler was sworn into office in April 2015 and elected to her second term in November 2019, according to the city's website. She previously served as a city councilwoman.
