KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Shawnee's current deputy chief of police has been named the city’s chief of police.

Sam Larson, who joined the Shawnee Police Department in 1999, was selected following a nationwide search after the current chief, Rob Moser, announced his retirement.

“I’m proud to have the opportunity to lead such a talented and dedicated Department,” Larson said in a news release. “Chief Moser has brought this department forward, and I will strive to build on the progress we have made under his leadership.”

Larson has worked as a patrol officer, traffic safety officer, STAR team officer and detective in Shawnee. He became a sergeant in 2005, and was promoted to captain in 2014. One year later, he was promoted to major. In 2019, Larson was named deputy chief.

City Manager Nolan Sunderman said in the release that Larson is “well-prepared” to lead the police department.

“He has a passion for local government and over 21 years of law enforcement experience,” Sunderman said. “Sam has been a successful, engaged leader for Shawnee, not only in the Department, but also in the community.”

Larson, a lifelong Shawnee resident, will assume the new role Feb. 24.
