KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A shooting suspect is in custody after a police chase late Friday morning.
At 10:15 a.m., Kansas City police officers were called to a shooting in the 2000 block of E. 30th Street.
When officers arrived, they found a shooting victim, who was then taken to a local hospital in critical condition. On Saturday, police said the victim died.
"I was worried," Demetrice Thompson said. "I didn't know what happened."
Thompson, who lives near where the shooting took place, said the area is pretty quiet.
"Everybody knows everybody. Everybody’s, you know, good. There’s never any type of drama over here, ever," Thompson said. "There’s a lot of kids that stay over in this neighborhood, that play at the park, play on the basketball hoops around here."
KCPD said officers saw the suspect fleeing the scene in a vehicle and pursued.
The suspect hit stop sticks near 25th and Indiana. The driver kept going on rims until he hit a curb and lost control.
The suspect then ran from the car, and officers chased him on foot.
The suspect was then taken into custody near 26th and Indiana.
The chase went through east Kansas City for about 20 minutes. The driver hit speeds of up to 80 mph and at times drove into oncoming traffic.
