KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Smithville teenager died after an apparent accidental shooting Friday night, police said.
Around 11 p.m., officers found the 17-year-old boy with an accidental gunshot wound in the 400 block of Highland Avenue.
First responders took over life-saving efforts from others at the scene. Despite those efforts, the teen was pronounced dead a short time later.
A Smithville School District spokeswoman identified the teen as Jacob Holland, a junior at Smithville High School.
School counselors and mental health professionals were available for students on Monday, the school district said.
