KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Shawnee Mission School District Superintendent Mike Fulton announced on Tuesday his intent to retire, according to a letter sent to parents.
According to the Shawnee Mission Board of Education, Fulton submitted the letter on Monday night.
"It is with deep appreciation and great respect for the Board of Education, every student, every staff member and our community that I share with you my intent to retire as superintendent in the Shawnee Mission School District effective on July 1, 2021," Fulton said in the letter. "To serve as superintendent in SMSD has been an honor."
He has been with the district since 2018.
The board said it would begin conversations in the coming weeks around the process of selecting the district's next superintendent.
