If you visit West 123rd Street in Olathe, Kansas, you'd find a quiet street that dead ends into an area with lots of trees.
Brittany Forest HOA President Adam Jarvis said, "That's what the majority of the neighbors around here would definitely like to keep. They would like it to stay a quiet neighborhood, dead end street and keep the school essentially in a cul-de-sac."
That may not be the case for long. On June 26, the city planning commission recommended a rezoning plan for approval that would allow Davis Development Apartments to build 240 apartments behind the neighborhood and extend 123rd Street to Pflumm.
Dan Routhieaux is selling his home nearby. He said, "The whole idea of what might be going on back there and the street going through, that was probably about 20 percent."
41 Action News reached out to the City of Olathe, which provided this statement:
Stub streets are not intended to be permanent. There is always the potential for development as a through-street as an area develops.
"Please put in traffic calming measures like roundabouts, like speed bumps, something. We don't want people flying by here," said Shannon Villasenor, a crossing guard at Heatherstone Elementary nearby. "Even though I've got my bright vest on, eight times people have just blown right by me, didn't even see me."
The full council will consider the proposal on August 1. People will have the opportunity to share their thoughts then. Already, the city has received 88 letters totaling close to 200 pages on this issue.
