KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Twenty children with disabilities will receive motorized "wheelchairs" thanks to Variety KC and 12 high school robotics teams.

Variety KC Go Baby Go!, along with The Barstow School, is a grassroots movement that is changing adaptive technology.

Instead of $25,000 for a motorized wheelchair for a growing child, the group takes ride-on, motorized cars and converts them into wheelchair alternatives for about $300 each.

Variety KC Go Baby Go! and The Barstow School robotics team began the program and have created more than 50 cars. They also have hosted a global online forum to share their how-to manuals.

Today, 12 high schools from across the Midwest are teaming up to build 20 cars for area families whose children will be able to take their first ride of independence without a traditional wheelchair.
