KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Overland Park will add a speed zone surrounding the intersection where a woman and four children were struck by a vehicle that left the roadway after a crash.
The incident happened around 7:30 a.m. on Oct. 24 as a woman walked the children to nearby Pawnee Elementary School near West 87th and Grant streets.
“We do have a plan in place to put a speed zone out there similar to what we’ve done at other thoroughfare locations where we have school crosswalks or crossing guards in place,” Overland Park City Traffic Engineer Brian Shields said in a voicemail to 41 Action News.
Video released on social media by Overland Park Police Chief Frank Donchez shows two westbound cars speed through the intersection as the light turns red.
An eastbound car, which tried to complete a left turn as the light changed, hit the car in the northernmost lane, redirecting it off the road at the northwest corner of the intersection.
Overland Park police announced Oct. 30 that citations would be issued to two of the drivers involved in the crash.
Now, the city plans to take additional steps to make the intersection safer for pedestrians, but the fix won’t happen for at least a month.
“We have to order equipment, get that assembled and get it deployed, so it will still be a month or two before we’re able to make all that happen,” Shields said.
